HOW TO BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

Winter is here, and with it comes the cold and the short, grey and gloomy days. During this season most people experience changes in their mood, levels of energy and even eating patterns; and sometimes these changes are so powerful that can become a significant problem in their lives.

I’m a winter baby, I feel at my best during the cold season, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get the winter blues sometimes. I swear there are days when getting out of bed seems like mission impossible. To help you beat the winter blues, I’ve prepared a list of things that have been useful for me and I hope will be able to help you to.

LET THERE BE LIGHT
Light deprivation is one of the key factors that can contribute to winter depression; so keep your blinds and curtains open, use a sun lamp, take vitamin D, spend at least 15 minutes a day outside and if you’re able to, take a holiday on a warm and sunny destination. Since I move to London I realized how important light is and how badly it can affect my well being if I don't get enough light exposure - We can’t make the sun shine or the days last longer, but there are things we can do to compensate for the lack of sunlight.

SELF CARE
Doing things like talking, writing and drawing to release your emotions will help you with your inner battles. Be kind to yourself and practice gratitude. Do yoga, meditation, plan your next holidays, try DIY projects, have a coffee with an old friend, take a break from social media and see how it makes you feel. There’s so much you can do, but is in your hands to take action.

‘TIS THE SEASON
One of the reasons why I love winter so much is because of the holidays; people seem more cheerful and content, more keen to have fun and have a good time. It’s a great excuse to get back in touch with people you haven’t seen or spoken to in a while, to spend more quality time with our loved ones. So enjoy the lights and the festive environment, walk around the city to admire the decorations and decorate your home with something that gets you into the holiday spirit. Happiness is contagious, and if you're open, amazing things can happen.

There’s no place like London during the holidays, and one of my favorite things to do is going for long walks and exploring the different neighborhood, seeing the decorations and having a nice cup of tea at a local cafe. This weekend I was around Notting Hill and you can see that most shops and even some houses are already in Christmas mode.

Fashion is a big part of my life, and looking good makes me feel good; that's why for me it's also a great way to deal with the winter blues. When it comes to what I wear on my "exploring missions" around London, I like to look good because there’s a very big chance I’ll find something Insta-worthy and I need to be picture ready, but practicality is even more important; being comfortable and and wearing functional pieces is a must. Take as example my new Kipling handbag, it's super light and very spacious, I can put anything in there in there and since it has so many pockets I can easily locate stuff inside, plus I won't end up with back pain from carrying a heavy bag with me all day - I love the fact that it is functional and of high quality with a unique style yet quirky and fun (as most Kipling bags). It goes perfect with grey (that together with black seems to be all I wear lately) and almost any color all year long. This bag is part of a line only available at Kipling stores.

By the way, have you noticed my new haircut? ;)

  3. I should probably live in LA because the cold and gloom of NY always brings on the blues this time of year. I make sure to get out and get some sun - that always helps. But as a busy mom I always get trapped in my house a couple days a week LOL. Love your haircut - and where did you get those sunnies! #love

  5. This is something that I don't think people realize happens to them. The first time I noticed it was when I was managing a retail store where I'd go in when it was dark and come out when it was dark. I definitely started to notice a change in my mood but didn't know why. I saw a good morning america show that touched on the topic and how it was beneficial to use artificial sun to help combat the winter blues. So it was interesting to learn. I love your hair and just recently cut mine off too! Your Kipling handbag is too cute and looks like a great size for outings! The boots are super cute too!

  7. I'm a winter baby too and actually love the cold more than the heat. Gloomy days and rainy days are my favorite but it does it hard to get out of bed or out of the house. Daylight savings also doesn't help with it getting darker earlier on...it makes me feel lazy. Winter dressing is my favorite as well with all the jackets, layers and coats. I love your tips for beating the winter blues are all so true. Need to remember them as it gets closer and closer to winter. xoxo, Christine

  8. I'm in LA and although I've spent college days on the East Coast, I can say that I don't miss the cold. I def notice that the sunset at 5pm affects people's moods. I think making the most out of the time during the day helps. You look so chic in this outfit, love that grey boots and the pearl details on your sleeves are so darling!

  9. First fo all, dare I say that the pictures are absolutely stunning! I love when it's a lot of air around, looks flawless! And winter in the UK must be the most amazing season, am I right?
Unfortunately, grey gloomy days are also the part of our German winter, and to be honest I can't stand it. When the sun is so rare so you have to turn on the light everywhere just to feel a little bit less moody. But the good thing is - Christmas is just around the corner and it definitely warms me up.

  10. I love winter and gloomy days, however I know a lot of people feel kind of depression with it and I know that it really can affect our mood. You look amazing on that outfit, love it head to toe. It's chic and sophisticated at the same time and you added a feminine touch to it. Your boots are the prefct complement to make this look even better.
    Have a great Thanksgiving!

  12. Exploring my local neighbourhoods during the Christmas season is one of my favourite things to do too! Sipping a hot cup of chocolate or coffee, and walking past beautiful decorated houses is so calming, yet exciting.
